Progesterone levels should be tested on the 5th or 6th day of the bitch's heat cycle. The test is repeated every 2-3 days until the bitch ovulates. It is important to determine the exact ovulation time in order to find out the best time for insemination which achieves the best conception rate. The newly ovulated egg needs to mature for 36 to 48 hours before it can be fertilized.
The following table is a guide only as best insemination time will depends on other factors such as whether it is live breeding, insemination with fresh chilled smen or frozen semen, and it is different from one individual to another. Please always check with the vet:
Progesterone level: <0.5 ng / ml: next sample should be collected after 4 days
Progesterone level: 0.5 - 1 ng / ml: next sample should be collected after 3 days
Progesterone level: > 1 ng / ml: next sample should be collected after 2 days
Progesterone level: > 3: bring the bitch to the male
Sample requied is serum which we prefer to receive cooled but this is not essential.
Sample should arrive very soon so please avoid sending weekends.
