ISE
- Ionised Ca represents the biologically active part of the total calcium.
- The sample should be collected without air (vacutainer system). The instructions can be requested from us.
Sampling Procedure for Measurement of Ionized Calcium
Important background:
Oxygen alters the concentration of ionized calcium, so it is crucial to avoid any contact between the sample and air!
Materials:
- 2 syringes
- 2 needles
- 2 unopened vacutainer tubes (ensure they do not contain EDTA, oxalate, or citrate)
- Centrifuge
Procedure:
- Collect blood by venipuncture using syringe 1.
- With the needle still attached, pierce the rubber lid of an unopened vacutainer tube and carefully fill it.
- Allow the blood to coagulate.
- Centrifuge the sample.
- Using a fresh needle and syringe, pierce the vacutainer's rubber lid again and collect the supernatant, taking care to avoid cellular particles and air bubbles.
- Transfer the supernatant into a fresh vacutainer using the same method.
- Prepare the tube for safe shipping.
Note:
Include a clearly visible note (in red, bold text) on your submission form stating that this sample is for the measurement of ionized calcium.
