Mild increases may be seen in some benign liver diseases in dogs.
In general hepatopathies, AFP values are usually normal or only slightly elevated.
In liver tumours, AFP concentrations are typically moderately to markedly increased.
AFP levels are physiologically elevated during pregnancy.
Therapy monitoring: following a previously elevated AFP result, concentrations should return to the normal range after successful surgical and/or chemotherapy treatment.
Relapse monitoring: repeat testing every 6 months is recommended.
AFP may also be elevated in mares with placentitis.
