Capillaria aerophila – Lungworm Detection
- Capillaria aerophila is a lungworm with low host specificity and zoonotic potential.
- Adults embed in the submucosa of the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, where they lay eggs.
- Eggs are coughed up, swallowed, and excreted in faeces; they become infectious after 30–45 days in the environment.
- Earthworms may play a role in transmission, though their exact function is not fully understood.
- Final hosts (e.g. dogs and cats) are infected by ingesting embryonated eggs.
- Larvae migrate from the intestine to the lungs via lymphatic or blood pathways, where they mature.
- Infections may be asymptomatic or cause mild to severe respiratory symptoms.
