Emydomyces testavorans was first described in 2019 and is a keratinophilic fungus belonging to the order Onygenales. To date, it has only been documented in aquatic turtles and terrapins, affecting both captive and wild individuals.
Infections have been associated with various shell lesions—particularly ulcerative types—as well as osteonecrosis and space-occupying epithelial inclusion cysts.
For PCR-based detection, a swab without transport medium is recommended. Suitable sampling sites include shell and skin, with a triple swab protocol (oral, cloacal, and shell) or direct collection of shell material.
