Description

PCR

Amdoparvovirus in Dogs (RFAV)

Amdoparvoviruses are pathogens best known for causing Aleutian Mink Disease and are primarily found in mustelids, but they can also infect canids. In March 2026, an outbreak of Raccoon Dog and Fox Amdoparvovirus (RFAV) was identified among Dobermann Pinschers in Serbia. Affected dogs may show eye and nasal discharge, weight loss, poor coat condition, liver dysfunction, and in advanced cases neurological symptoms and corneal oedema. The infection is chronic and multisystemic, and often leads to death in severely affected animals.

The incubation period ranges from approximately two weeks to two months, and the virus can remain detectable in the blood for an extended period. Initial cases have since been reported in additional regions, and so far only Dobermann dogs have been affected.

The PCR test is genus-specific for amdoparvoviruses; in the event of a positive result, species differentiation will be performed by sequencing at no additional cost.
