Bile Acid Stimulation Test
The bile acid stimulation test is used to assess liver function in dogs and cats. It helps identify reduced hepatic function, impaired hepatic blood flow, or the presence of a portosystemic shunt.
Indication
Liver function testing
Species
Dog, Cat
Sample Requirements
- Serum
- Two samples required
- Approx. 0.5 ml per sample
Test Procedure
- Collect the first serum sample after 8–10 hours of fasting (pre-prandial value)
- Feed a small high-fat meal (e.g. 100 g meat + 5 g fat per 10 kg bodyweight)
- Collect the second serum sample 2 hours after feeding (post-prandial value)
What the Test Measures
Bile acids in both the fasting and post-prandial samples.
Interpretation
- Elevated bile acids (pre- and/or post-prandial) indicate liver dysfunction or a portosystemic shunt
- Moderate increases (below 80–100 µmol/l) may also occur in conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome or chronic enteropathy
- Post-hepatic cholestasis (e.g. bile duct obstruction or rupture) can also cause increased bile acid levels
Results should always be interpreted alongside clinical signs, imaging findings, and other laboratory parameters.
