Saliva collection instructions for cortisol testing in guinea pigs
Using Salivette® Cortisol is recommended to ensure a sufficient saliva volume of at least 50 µl for reliable cortisol measurement.
Preparation
- Ensure the guinea pig is calm and gently handled to minimise stress-related cortisol changes.
- Rinse the mouth with a small amount of water to remove any feed particles.
Collection
- Wait 30 minutes after rinsing to allow saliva to regenerate and avoid dilution of the sample.
- Offer the fixed synthetic fibre roll from the Salivette and allow the guinea pig to chew on it until it is well moistened.
- Place the Salivette back into its tube and centrifuge to extract the saliva.
Storage and shipping
- Transfer the collected saliva to a labelled tube if required.
- Keep the sample chilled and ship it with ice packs to maintain stability during transport.
