Diagnosis
- Endocrine-active adrenal neoplasia
- Adrenal hyperplasia
- Early Cushing’s disease
Species
Dog
Sample Requirements
Test Procedure
- Baseline Collection – First blood sample is collected.
- ACTH Injection – 5 µg ACTH/kg administered as Cosacthen® (i.v./i.m.).
- Stimulation Collection – Second blood sample taken 1 hour post-ACTH injection.
Parameters Measured
- Cortisol
- 17-OH-progesterone
Interpretation
- Follows the standard ACTH Stimulation Test for cortisol interpretation.
- For assessing steroidal adrenal pathologies, both cortisol and 17-OH-progesterone are measured.
- Dual measurement is useful when cortisol results are questionable post-ACTH stimulation.
Expected Findings
- In healthy dogs, 17-OH-progesterone concentration can rise up to 180 ng/dl after ACTH stimulation.
- Dogs with enzyme defects or adrenal tumors may show increased baseline levels and significant hyperstimulation.
- Dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism also exhibit hyperstimulation.
- If cortisol levels significantly rise after stimulation, it supports a diagnosis of classic hyperadrenocorticism.
- Dogs treated with Vetoryl® cannot be tested for 17-OH-progesterone due to test limitations.
