Tumour Marker: AFP (Alpha-Fetoprotein)
- Mild increases may be seen in some benign liver diseases in dogs.
- In general hepatopathies, AFP values are usually normal or only slightly elevated.
- In liver tumours, AFP concentrations are typically moderately to markedly increased.
- AFP levels are physiologically elevated during pregnancy.
- Therapy monitoring: following a previously elevated AFP result, concentrations should return to the normal range after successful surgical and/or chemotherapy treatment.
- Relapse monitoring: repeat testing every 6 months is recommended.
- AFP may also be elevated in mares with placentitis.
