Description |
|
Coat colour, pattern, and texture in cats are influenced by multiple genes. However, hair length is determined by a single gene—FGF5. To date, five different genetic variants in the FGF5 gene (M1–M5) have been identified that affect hair length. Four of these (M1, M2, M3, M5) are relatively breed-specific, while M4 is found across all long-haired breeds and crossbreds.
Long-haired coat length is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Cats carrying a long hair variant will appear short-haired but have a 50% chance of passing on the variant. Long-haired cats may be homozygous recessive (two copies of the same variant) or compound heterozygous (two different variants, one on each chromosome).
LABOKLIN offers a coat length test that detects all five known FGF5 variants. Other variants may exist but have not yet been identified.
The DNA test distinguishes the following genotypes:
- N/N: Cat has short hair . None of the 5 long hair variants detected. Cat cannot produce long-haired kittens.
- N/M1, N/M2, N/M3, N/M4 or N/M5: Cat has short hair and carries one copy of a long hair variant. Cat can produce short and long-haired kittens depending on genotype of the mate.
- M1/M1, M2/M2, M3/M3, M4/M4 or M5/M5: Cat has long hair and will produce only long-haired kittens when bred to a long-haired mate.
- M1/M2, M1/M3, M1/M4, M1/M5, M2/M3, M2/M4, M2/M5, M3/M4, M3/M5, M4/M5: Cat has long hair and carries two different long hair variants (compound heterozygote). Cat will produce only long-haired kittens when bred to other long-haired cats.
DNA testing provides high accuracy, can be performed at any age, and identifies both long-haired cats and short-haired carriers.
