Leukoencephalopathy is an inherited disease affecting the Schauzer breed. The disease is characterised by neurological symptoms including dysphagia, non-ambulatory tetraparesis, hypermetric ataxia, circling, dysphoria, head tilt, strabismus and generalized tonic-clonic seizures or sudden death. Scientists identified a variant that has been found to be associated with leukoencephalopathy in this breed. Due to several clinical signs, affected puppies are usually euthanized few days after birth.
