The Disease |
Lundehund-Syndrome ( Lymphagetasia ) term used for a group of gastrointestinal disorders that include bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine and protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) which cause abnormal protein loss / deficiency in the intestines. It is a chronic form of gastroenteropathy (GE; lundehund-syndrome or lundehund-gastroenteropathy). It is a digestive disorder in which the dog's digestive tract is unable to absorb nutrients and protein from food. Different possible causes of this kind of enteropathy have been discussed, such as
inflammatory bowel disease, mucosal lesions or primary and secondary lymphangiectasia. Histopathological findings are chronic atrophic
gastritis, lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis and intestinal lymphangiectasia
(Kolbjørnsen et al., 1994). The disease can eventually lead to lymphoma, or cancer of the intestines or stomach, sometimes with consequent perforation. Age of onset: between 6 month and 10 years.
