The Disease
DSRA is a hereditary disease affecting the Cane Corso breed. The disease is characterized by brittle, discolored, translucent teeth, disproportionate growth and progressive retinal degeneration resulting in vision loss.

In 2020, we were approached by Cane Corso breeders who were concerned about a health problem they believed was possibly a genetic one. With the help of very ambitious breeders who supplied us with samples and health status from different dogs we started a study for evaluating the underlying genetic cause of a disease in the Cane Corso breed. Affected dogs suffer from eye, teeth and skeletal problems. We received samples from dogs from Latvia, Poland, Russia and Netherlands. Together with our collaboration partner Prof. Leeb and his team at the University of Bern we detected a genetic variant being causative. We can now proudly that we are able to offer a genetic test to help in controlling this disease in the breed. The disease is called Dental-skeletal-retinal anomaly (DSRA) and is inherited in a recessive manner.

Together with breeders and researchers we made a great step towards a healthy future for the breed! Thank you to all the people involved in this ambitious scientific work to provide best health service for dogs!

The dog is noncarrier of the mutant gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop Dental skeletal retinal anomaly ( DSRA ). The dog will never pass the mutation to its offspring, and therefore it can be bred to any other dog.

 

Carrier

Genotype: N / [ Heterozygous ]

The dog carries one copy of the mutant gene and one copy of the normal gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop Dental skeletal retinal anomaly ( DSRA ) but since it carries the mutant gene, it can pass it on to its offspring with the probability of 50%.

Carriers should only be bred to clear dogs.

Avoid breeding carrier to carrier because 25% of their offspring is expected to be affected (see table above)

Genotype: / [ Homozygous mutant ]

 

The dog carries two copies of the mutant gene and therefore it will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring.

The dog is likely to develop Dental skeletal retinal anomaly ( DSRA ) and will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring
