Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Golden Retriever (HCM Goldi)

Test number: 8975
Gene Name: TNNI3
Short Name: HCM Goldi
Price: £ 48.00 (including VAT)
Breed
Golden Retriever .
Description

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Golden Retriever (HCM Goldi)

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease of the heart muscle where the walls of the heart become abnormally thickened. This reduces the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively and can lead to serious complications. It is also known as cardiac sarcomere

Symptoms

  • Reduced exercise tolerance
  • Breathing difficulties or rapid breathing
  • Fainting or collapse episodes
  • Heart murmurs detected during veterinary examination
  • In severe cases, sudden cardiac death

The Test

This genetic test screens Golden Retrievers for a variant in the TNNI3 gene, which encodes Cardiac Troponin-I. This variant was found in a family of Golden Retrievers and follows a recessive inheritance pattern. It has not been seen in thousands of other dogs, showing that it is unique to Golden Retrievers.

Notes

  • Autosomal recessive inheritance: Dogs must inherit two copies of the variant (one from each parent) to be at risk of disease.
  • Carriers (one copy): Healthy themselves but can pass the variant to offspring.
  • Breeding impact: Testing allows breeders to identify carriers and avoid pairing two carriers, preventing affected puppies.
  • Health impact: Early identification supports informed breeding decisions and proactive veterinary care, reducing the risk of HCM in future generations.

Clear

Genotype: N / N [ Homozygous normal ]

The dog is noncarrier of the mutant gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Golden Retriever (HCM Goldi). The dog will never pass the mutation to its offspring, and therefore it can be bred to any other dog.

Carrier

Genotype: N / HCM Goldi [ Heterozygous ]

The dog carries one copy of the mutant gene and one copy of the normal gene.

It is very unlikely that the dog will develop Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Golden Retriever (HCM Goldi) but since it carries the mutant gene, it can pass it on to its offspring with the probability of 50%.

Carriers should only be bred to clear dogs.

Avoid breeding carrier to carrier because 25% of their offspring is expected to be affected (see table above)

Affected

Genotype: HCM Goldi / HCM Goldi [ Homozygous mutant ]

The dog carries two copies of the mutant gene and therefore it will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring.

The dog is likely to develop Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Golden Retriever (HCM Goldi) and will pass the mutant gene to its entire offspring
