Australian Kelpie .
Description

Intestinal Lipid Malabsorption (ILM) in the Australian Kelpie

Intestinal Lipid Malabsorption (ILM) is a hereditary metabolic disorder in the Australian Kelpie that affects the absorption and processing of dietary fats in the small intestine. The condition is caused by a variant in the ACSL5 gene, which plays a key role in the uptake and metabolism of long-chain fatty acids. When this gene is altered, affected dogs are unable to efficiently absorb fats, leading to characteristic clinical signs from an early age.

Puppies with ILM often fail to thrive, remain noticeably smaller than their littermates, and commonly produce greasy, pale-coloured stools. Their coat may appear rough, shaggy or wiry due to poor nutrient absorption. Although some symptoms may become less pronounced as the dog matures, affected animals typically remain smaller throughout life and often continue to show intolerance to high-fat diets.

Genetic testing is an important tool for breeders, as it allows reliable identification of carrier dogs. This supports responsible breeding decisions and helps prevent the birth of affected puppies, contributing to the long-term health and genetic stability of the Australian Kelpie population.
